Little Gem – Au Petit Café

_MG_8693
_MG_8692 Au Petit Café has been a place that Ying has wanted to try for a long time! Well, ever since our food blogging adventures have started at least. The main problem with this place is that it closes every day at 7 PM; while Ying and I are rarely both free for lunch in this neighbourhood. This is definitely a hole-in-the-wall neighbourhood gem type of place that you have to know about to enter. It’s located on Main St. and 32nd/33rd Ave, in a stretch of Main St that isn’t very busy. There was quite a bit of street parking available. :D It advertises itself as an authentic Vietnamese restaurant, not that I really know what authentic is. :P I’m just here for the yummy food.

The interior is simple and tiny… living up to its name for sure. The tables are all tiny… heck even the chair are quite tiny. Despite its size, the place was packed with diners… at 3PM on a weekday! I noticed that there were many families who seemed to be return customers, as they could order their favourites right away. We got lucky and were promptly seated as soon as we entered, but noticed a lineup forming a mere 5 minutes later.

Their menu is a simple two-pager, with only a few categories that includes **FRESH** French Bread sandwiches and Vietnamese noodle dishes. I left Ying in charge of ordering. She eagerly ordered two French Bread sandwiches for us and a noodle soup to share. She mentioned later that she had forgotten to order a coffee… oh well next time!
_MG_8712 The first dish that came was French Bread Sub with Home Made Ham, House Meat Ball, Vegetable and Hot Peppers. ($5.00) It may not look like much but its taste is phenomenal! The toasted bread is fresh evident by its texture. It’s crunchy. It’s chewy. It’s absolutely delicious. The meat and veggie in between the buns work so well together. The fresh green pepper, cucumber, cilantro complemented the well seasoned Vietnamese ham very well. The house meat balls were super moist and melt-in-your-mouth type of tender; while the occasional jalapeno pepper really added a kick to the flavour.

The other sandwich we got was the French Bread Sub with Home Made Ham, Liver Pate, Vegetables and Hot Peppers. ($4.00) This one was quite similar to the first sandwich we got, but was a bit drier – mainly because of the absence of the moist meat balls. The Liver Pate added a little bit of a fatty taste to it that made it quite interesting. Ying mentioned that she liked the first one better since it had more flavour.

We also got the Curry Beef Stew Served with Rice Noodle in Soup. ($8.75) Oh so yummy stew! The beef and tendon pieces were stewed until they were really tender. Although the soup was a bit fatty, it had so much flavour to it. Ying was going to serve out my portion in a small bowl, but I took one sip and decided to hog the entire bowl to myself. :D The curry wasn’t intensely spicy. The rice noodles was basically the same kind used for usual Vietnamese pho. I had never had it in a curry stew before, but it was pretty good.

The Yummies:
  • Very good Vietnamese subs! (can’t believe it took us this long to try these darn things!)
  • Reasonably priced
  • Fresh ingredients
The Yuckies:
  • The potential to line up for a long time!
  • Very crowded dining area
